How to get an API key
MATE connects to AI models through their official APIs. To use MATE, you need an API key from at least one provider.
What is an API key?
An API key is like a password that lets MATE talk to an AI model on your behalf. Each provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral) has its own key. You create the key on the provider's website, paste it into MATE, and you're ready to go.
Important to know
API keys are separate from chat subscriptions. A ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, or Gemini Advanced subscription does not include API access. You need a developer account, which is a separate thing.
Most providers charge per use (pay-as-you-go). It really depends on how much you use it.
You only need one provider to get started. You can always add more later.
Choose your provider
OpenAI (GPT-5.4, GPT-5.2, etc)
Anthropic Claude (Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6, etc)
Google Gemini (Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3.1 Flash, etc)
Mistral (Mistral 3 Large, etc)
Which one should I pick?
Any of them will work well with MATE. If you're unsure, OpenAI or Anthropic (Claude) are the most popular choices. Gemini is a good option if you want to work with Illustrator and for creative work. Mistral is a strong European alternative.
You can switch between providers at any time using the Model Switcher in MATE.
