To connect to Claude Desktop, you need to install a small helper tool: a Claude Desktop extension.

This guide has two parts: first, installation on Mac; second, installation on Windows. Follow the section for your computer.

Install on Mac

1. Install the extension

   Click Install for Claude Desktop above. MATE opens the extension directly in Claude Desktop. When Claude asks for confirmation, click “Install”.

2. Confirm the install

   In Claude, open Customize > Connectors and make sure MATE appears and is enabled.

3. Open a new chat

   Start a fresh Claude Desktop chat so the MATE tools are available in the session.

4. Test the connection

   Start a fresh Claude chat and try this prompt:

   “List the available MATE tools.”

Troubleshooting

To install a saved .mcpb file from inside Claude Desktop:

1. Open Claude Desktop.

2. Open Customize.

3. Open Extensions.

4. Click Advanced settings.

5. Click Install Extension.

6. Select the saved .mcpb file.

Install on Windows

Unfortunately, Claude Desktop currently does not register the .mcpb file type with Windows. Because Windows cannot open the downloaded file directly in Claude, you need to install it manually from inside Claude Desktop.

1. Download the extension file

   Click Download .mcpb file above. MATE saves the file in Downloads and selects it in Explorer.

2. Open Claude Desktop

   Open Claude Desktop.

3. Open Customize

   Click Customize in Claude Desktop.

4. Open Extensions

   Click Extensions.

5. Open Advanced settings

   Click Advanced settings.

6. Install the extension

   Click Install Extension.

7. Select the downloaded file

   Select the MATE .mcpb file from Downloads.

8. Confirm the install

   Open Customize > Connectors and make sure MATE appears and is enabled.

9. Open a new chat and test

   Start a fresh Claude chat and try this prompt:

   “List the available MATE tools.”
